A poorly installed window will allow moisture damage, mold and cost you money on your utility bill. This guide will show you proper prep and cleaning of the opening and proper techniques of installing a new window.
Choosing And Fitting The The Right Window
There are different types of windows to choose from here are residential window types.
• Double-hung: Traditional, easy to take care of great looking. • Casement: panes open to the outside allowing for complete flowing of air. • Picture windows: Just as they are named permanent large panes of glass. • Sliding: Moves side to side, useful in tight spaces
Window Material And Measuring For Replacement.
There are several window materials they include wood, vinyl, fiberglass and hybrid materials. Some are ENERGY STAR rated and could be eligible for rebates.
When measuring it is important to measure the height and width in 3 places. Do this on the inside and outside use exact measurements as many windows are custom fit.

Materials you will need are the new window, expanding foam spray, flashing tape, nails or screws and waterproof sealant.
Taking Out The Old Window
Carefully remove the interior trim using a flat bar. If there is exterior siding or stucco remove it using the flat bar or by hitting the stucco with a hammer to expose the window frame.
Remove the window frame and repair any rotting wood or damage to the framing. Measure again to make sure the new window will fit and insure the framing is level and plumb.
Install The New Window

Fix the window in place with screws. During the installation continue to check for level and plumb before final tightening of all screws.
Weatherproofing The Window
Fill any gaps you find with expanding foam following directions on the can. Allow to dry and cure then trim excess. Install the flashing tape overlapping the frame of the window.
Apply sealant to outside edges. Check the operation of the window. If all is good you can reinstall trim or siding to finish the job. Caulk any trim and siding at the window to prevent drafts and water intrusion. Conduct a water test by spraying the window and siding. Check for leaks
